What is ADPCM ?
ADPCM (adaptive differential pulse-code modulation) is a technique for converting sound or analog information to binary information (a string of 0's and 1's) by taking frequent samples of the sound and expressing the value of the sampled sound modulation in binary terms. ADPCM is used to send sound on fiber-optic long-distance lines as well as to store sound along with text, images, and code on a CD-ROM.
ADPCM codecs are waveform codecs which instead of quantizing the speech signal directly, like PCM codecs, quantize the difference between the speech signal and a prediction that has been made of the speech signal. If the prediction is accurate then the difference between the real and predicted speech samples will have a lower variance than the real speech samples, and will be accurately quantized with fewer bits than would be needed to quantize the original speech samples. At the decoder the quantized difference signal is added to the predicted signal to give the reconstructed speech signal. The performance of the codec is aided by using adaptive prediction and quantization, so that the predictor and difference quantizer adapt to the changing characteristics of the speech being coded.
What is IMA ADPCM ?
The International Multimedia Association (IMA) flavor of ADPCM compresses 16-bit data to 4-bits/sample (4:1) using a different (faster) method than Microsoft ADPCM, and has different distortion characteristics, which can produce either better or worse results, depending on the sample being compressed. As with Microsoft ADPCM, it’s best to save to this format from 16-bit rather than from 8-bit. This compression scheme can be a good alternative to MPEG; it provides reasonably fast decoding of 4:1 compression, and it degrades sample quality only slightly.
