It is not necessary to record all your files at the high sample and bit resolutions. However, most people who are using the CardDeluxe to convert their LPs will use the higher resolutions to not only take advantage of the better sonic quality, but will then store those high quality files to
CD-ROM for archiving purposes. If the end goal is to make audio CDs and if you use
high resolutions, at some point, a sample rate conversion and dithering process will be necessary after all the editing and processing is completed within the computer. This process is most likely completed within the software you are using, so if you're interested in the details of their dither and SRC, you may wish to consult their help manual and documentation.

The CardDeluxe provides the option for Input Dithering only. The reason for this is because our analog to digital converters are always operating at 24 bits. Therefore, if someone chooses to record their files in 16 bit format, something has to happen to those last 8 bits. When no dither is applied,
the last 8 bits are simply truncated. To avoid truncation, we allow the user to apply dither. Type I is rectangular dither (we add one uniformly distributed random number). Type II is triangular dither (we add two uniformly distributed random numbers, effectively adding a single random
number with a triangular distribution).

As far as input gain, yes, it is important that the gain be as close to 0dBFS as possible. In theory, this will reduce the amount of quantization error in the conversion process. The important thing to remember is that the CardDeluxe's noise floor is so low that even if a minor gain
process has to completed in software, the resulting file should still sound very
good. One way to avoid a large software gain process is to place an inline amplifier/ gain controller in the analog realm before the CardDeluxe.
